A Climate Resilient Solution
The GeoBarrier System (GBS) was jointly developed by HDB and Nanyang Technological University (NTU). Its layered design helps maintain slope strength during heavy rainfall by directing infiltrating rainwater away from the slope and limiting saturation.
The system has three main layers: a planted surface containing approved soil mix (ASM), a fine-grained layer and a coarse-grained layer. The different hydraulic properties of the fine and coarse materials create a capillary barrier that diverts rainwater and helps manage moisture within the slope.

At Cheng Soon Garden, prolonged rainfall caused a boundary retaining wall to collapse. The client engaged Hocklim to replace it with a planted GeoBarrier retaining structure.
